There are two ways to invest in Equal Exchange:
- Buying the Equal Exchange CD
- Buying Preferred shares from one of our occasional (and restricted) share offerings.
Each allows us to grow Fair Trade and bring in new farming families into the system. It takes around $2,500 dollars to buy the harvest of a small family farm (supporting 6-8 people), giving them a step on the first rung of the ladder. $10,000 covers 4 families, around 30 people. Imagine a hillside in El Salvador, on the slopes of an old volcano, or a small stream valley in the Peruvian Andes. Four families have farmed that land for generations. Can they stay on the land, and afford to send a son or daughter to school of college. Can the working with their local co-op put aside some money to add sugar cane mill and diversify their farming?
If they can sell their harvest at Fair Trade prices, and have a local co-op to support each other they have a chance. And once they have a chance, the path forward is their to forge. Bueno.
